The Release Management Organisation are a shared services that provide programme and project management services to our major releases and key strategic initiatives to ensure execution of our strategy. The Release Management Function implements and drives a methodology to enable our organisation to consistently deliver projects faster, with higher quality and meets customers’ expectations. Release Management is a mechanism used to address common project delivery themes to support and facilitate end to end project success and delivery governance.


Job purpose:  


To ensure alignment with strategy and vision, the Programme Manager will establish and guide the balancing of resources for programmes of work in the Release Management Organisation. Responsible for providing key stakeholders with timely assessment of programme performance, risk management and optimization strategies, and ensuring timely communication to stakeholders on progress and change management. Responsible for identification, monitoring and reporting of programme and KPIs and communicating these effectively through a standard set of programme reporting tools and templates.


Initially focusing on our Cloud Eco System, this role will work across functional areas to drive delivery through cross-functional facilitation of planning, key milestone tracking, dependency, risk, issue and change management whilst ensuring adherence to standard processes and governance.  This role will also be expected to contribute to building and implementing new processes, standards and governance controls within the Cloud Eco System Product Portfolio and assist in expanding the adoption of these processes and controls across the full Sage Product Portfolio.


  • Planning: Work with cross-functional teams to develop delivery plans, including capacity planning based on resource allocation, defining milestones based on type/complexity of project, identifying all deliverables, identifying release criteria, and ensuring that each functional area develops detailed plans as required to ensure successful delivery. Ensures approval and communication of plan to all stakeholders.
  • Cross-product coordination: Works with other Programme Managers as needed to identify and manage cross-project and/or cross-product dependencies to ensure successful delivery of all products.
  • Project tracking: Tracks programme schedules, variances from plan, milestones, deliverables, tasks, owners, and issues throughout all phases of the project. Ensures that the project plan is reviewed and refined at key milestones to ensure successful delivery. Ensures that issues are identified and resolved.
  • Risk management: Ensures that cross-functional teams continually identifies possible risks and develops mitigation plans, including defining impact, severity, time-criticality, and risk mitigation actions. Manages risks to resolution.  
  • Team meetings: Plans, schedules and facilitates release meetings as required to ensure successful delivery, including ensuring cross-functional representation, developing agendas, and distributing meeting notes.
  • Change control: Ensures that all potential changes to the product and/or release plan are tracked, considered, impact is assessed and weighed, and that a decision is made.
  • Status reporting: Reports weekly programme status against plan/schedule, key weekly team achievements, hot issues, risks, and risk mitigation plans. Reports status at an appropriate level of detail for different audiences (team vs. management).   
  • Release Retrospectives: Performs retrospective reviews following each major release for the purpose of identifying lessons learnt and areas to improve for the next release.
  • Process: Ensures that cross-functional teams follow the defined governance processes and helps to evolve the governance framework as needed, including identifying process improvement areas and helping to implement and communicate them.
  • Accountable for their team’s adherence to business plans and the strategic architecture, technology, and tools strategies.
  • Accountable for identifying key risks, putting in place mitigation actions and escalating major operational issues


Skills, know-how and experience:

Must have

  • Ability to quickly understand complex projects and ensure delivery alignment with organisational strategy and vision
  • Proven programme management skills, including the ability to work across teams to plan, track, and drive cross-functional deliverables, priorities and issues for projects of all sizes
  • Experience with planning, tracking, and delivering software products targeted for external customers
  • Very strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and comfortable communicating at all levels of an organisation
  • Ability to form and manage cohesive teams, including motivating, encouraging team work, gaining consensus, providing clear direction, and ensuring communication across the team in a matrix and disparate geographical organisation
  • Ability to manage programme conflicts and drive creative solutions
  • Ability to identify process improvement opportunities and approaches


  • Accountancy qualification desirable
  • MSP / PMP Programme qualification or equivalent
  • Very strong technical and strong commercial acumen
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively
